GREEN BUILDING
Green Building is a systemized, whole house approach to design and construction. Applied correctly, the individual components work together as a system, resulting in a durable, high performance home that makes efficient use of materials, reduces job-site waste, employs practical water conservation fixtures, and creates a healthier living environment. Sagatov Associates believes in using this systemized approach to design and build functional homes and home renovations that are healthy, responsible, and aesthetically attractive.
THE FIVE ELEMENTS OF GREEN BUILDING
I Energy Efficiency
Energy Efficiency is achieved mainly by creating a tight seal between the home and the surrounding environment. Cellulose insulation (shown below) boosts the energy efficiency of a home by allowing less heat transference and airflow than fiberglass insulation.

II Efficient Use of Materials and Waste Management
Efficient use of materials is vital in minimizing the impact of construction on the surrounding environment during the building process. Using panelized wall sections (shown below) creates far less waste than standard ‘stick’ framing.

III Water Conservation
Using less water throughout the home benefits both the environment and the homeowner’s pocketbook. Installing practical water conservation fixtures such as dual flush toilets (shown below) greatly reduces both water costs and waste.

IV Healthful Living Environment
In creating a more energy efficient environment, steps must be taken to ensure proper air circulation. Creating a tight exterior seal introduces less fresh air if proper mechanical and electrical systems are not incorporated in the home’s design. Systems such as Energy Recovery Ventilators (shown below) constantly introduce fresh air to the home while simultaneously expelling stale air. The result is a much higher indoor air quality than a standard home can provide.

V Durability
Increasing a home’s ‘life cycle’ is a crucial aspect of Green building. This is achieved by using durable building materials. Exterior products such as fiber-cement siding, metal roofs and aluminum clad low-e argon gas windows (shown below) are low maintenance, attractive, and effective at controlling moisture and heat. Used correctly, these products last longer than standard materials, minimizing the home’s impact on the surrounding environment.
